Dress Code for Teachers? (tampabays10.com)- The Hernando County school district has proposed tightening the dress code for teachers.
District officials say it's a way of having a consistent dress code across all schools. Over the summer, the school district delayed a plan to have all students wear a school uniform such as collared shirts and khakis until January. District officials say as they discussed the idea complaints came in about what teachers are wearing.
Some students and parents say if dress codes are changing then teachers should lead the way.
"If they're going to tell the students what to wear, they also should have a dress code," says parent Emmanuel Turner.
Parent Dianne Damm says, "I think it's necessary, because they're an example."
The school district is proposing strict guidelines for the teacher dress code that include no blue jeans, no shorts, no tank tops or sneakers except for PE teachers and on Spirit days. More...
Hurricane Exhibit Opens (tampabays10.com)- Disney Tuesday opened its newest exhibit, a hurricane simulator at Epcot Center which aims to teach visitors how to better protect their homes ahead of dangerous storms.
The experience includes a "4-D" movie which puts participants in the middle of a massive storm. They're then quizzed on the best ways to protect their homes, and the answers are later put to the test.
There's also an interactive area for children to learn about storms and how to put together an emergency storm kit.
Disney Imagineers worked with the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, the National Weather Service and other expert groups on the project. Organizers say by doing simple things before a storm hits, lives can be saved and monetary losses minimized.
Teach Your Kids to Wash Their Hands Correctly (tampabays10.com)- He's a star your kids probably know -- Mitchel Musso -- he plays "Oliver" on "Hannah Montana".
He's now a celebrity endorser, and he came to the Bay area to kick off his new campaign. But here's the big product he's endorsing: washing your hands.
He's the spokes-dude for a new campaign that's trying to stop the spread of MRSA in schools. And MRSA is nasty stuff. It's a staph infection that common antibiotics can't stop.
As kids filed into the Trinity Elementary School cafeteria for an assembly Monday, they could feel something special was about to happen.
Welcomed by a stupendous cheer, Mitchel Musso walked into the back of the room and up the center aisle. Kids from about ages 5 to 15 know him as "Oliver" from "Hannah Montana". For a few minutes, he spoke to the gathered crowd about why he washes his hands and why his starry-eyed fans should do the same. More...

Most women choose their bridesmaids from among their dearest childhood friends.
Mary Lee Seffrood made her candidates run for the position - literally.
The 37-year-old West Chicago resident married Daniel A. Milinko on Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn, but not before staging a "Battle of the Bridesmaids" 5K race to determine who would accompany her on this special day.
About 75 local runners showed up at Wheaton's Danada Equestrian Center at 8:30 a.m., with the top three female finishers rewarded with the coveted bridesmaids slots.
"We're both runners and we wanted it to be a part of our wedding day," Seffrood said as the runners got lined up for the start. "It's such an important part of our lives."
The entry fee was waived, but donations were taken for multiple sclerosis research. More...
Nun Pageant Cancelled
(Reuters)- An Italian priest who had planned an online "pageant" for nuns has suspended the project, saying he was misinterpreted and had no intention of putting sisters on a beauty catwalk.
"My superiors were not happy. The local bishop was not happy, but they did not understand me either," Father Antonio Rungi told Reuters by telephone from his convent in southern Italy Tuesday.
"It was not at all my intention to put nuns on the catwalk," said Rungi, a priest of the Passionists religious order, speaking from his convent in the town of Mondragone.
Rungi's idea appeared in newspapers around the world after he wrote of a contest for nuns on his blog, called by some "Sister Italy 2008."
"It was interpreted as more of a physical thing. Now, no-one is saying that nuns can't be beautiful, but I was thinking about something more complete," he said.
He said his concept for the contest, in which nuns would vote for themselves on his blog, would include attributes such as their spirituality, social awareness, charity and other qualities.
Rungi wrote in his blog that his intention was to show "the interior beauty" of a nun and the work she does for the Church and for society, mostly in education and health care. More...

Why Do We Get Baggy Eyes? (livescience.com)- As we age, our eyes inevitably take on a baggy look. Now scientists think they know why.
Fat in the eye socket expands.
The finding could prove useful to the growing number of people not satisfied with the natural look.
Eyelids are not just extraneous flaps of skin. They are crucial for protecting the eye from debris and damage. The eye and eyelid are so connected that the pressure of the eyelid on the eyeball may cause one of the most common vision problems, researchers learned in 2006. Not something you want to muck around with.
Yet eyelid surgery, top or bottom, is more common than you might think. Nearly 241,000 U.S. residents had it performed last year, putting it in the top four among surgical cosmetic procedures performed.
Most of these surgeries don't remove any fat, however. They just move it around or, in a more invasive move, tighten the muscle that surrounds the eye or tighten the ligament that holds the eyeball in place. No data indicated this was the right approach, the researchers point out in the September 2008 issue of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. More...
Couple Splits (AP)- Nicollette Sheridan and Michael Bolton have ended their engagement.
The split was amicable, said Nicole Perna, a publicist for the pair.
The 44-year-old actress and 55-year-old singer have been engaged since March 2006. They first started dating in 1992 and spent five years together, Perna said, then rekindled their romance in 2005.
Idol Judge's First Day (AP)- It was only her first day as an "American Idol" judge, but already Kara DioGuardi seemed part of the dysfunctional family.
DioGuardi, the freshly-installed fourth "Idol" critic, joined Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson in a public show of solidarity Tuesday afternoon as the quartet entered a Chelsea Piers building on Manhattan's west side for a round of season eight auditions.
They walked a red carpet amid a media circus aimed at getting the first photo opportunity of DioGuardi with her new co-workers. Cowell summed up the thinking behind adding the 37-year-old singer-songwriter to the panel.
"It's like, you know, having dinner with three people for seven years, and getting quite bored of each other," Cowell told reporters. "So it's having a fourth person, new opinion, I think it's gonna be interesting."
"I think it's gonna make it sexier," said Jackson, chiming in. More...

Hurricane Gustav (AP)- Gustav continued to gain strength after becoming a hurricane early Tuesday and forecasters said it could become a Category 2 hurricane before hitting Haiti's southern coast.
The fast-forming storm was also on track to hit Cuba.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the hurricane's maximum sustained winds were near 85 mph (140 kph) with higher gusts. A Category 2 hurricane has winds of 96 mph (154 kph) or higher.
At 5 a.m. EDT Tuesday, the hurricane was centered about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south-southeast of Port-au-Prince and was moving toward the northwest near 9 mph (15 kph).
On Monday, Carnival Cruise Lines diverted one of its ships to a Mexican port instead of Montego Bay, Jamaica, to avoid the storm, company spokesman Vance Gulliksen said. Other cruise lines said they were closely tracking its path.
After passing over Haiti, Gustav was expected to hit Cuba's southeastern tip Wednesday. More...

But They Are So Good!
(AP)- Nestle Prepared Foods Company is recalling about 215,660 pounds of frozen stuffed pepperoni pizza sandwich products, known as Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza, because the product might contain small pieces of hard red plastic and other foreign material, which pose a risk of serious injury to consumers.
The Mt. Sterling, Ky., company has received four consumer complaints and no reports of injuries. Spokeswoman Roz O’Hearn said the reported foreign substance — hard red plastic as well as clear flexible rubber-like material — might have splintered off from a testing device and some of it could be buried inside with sharp edges.
The recall involves 54-ounce, 12-pack cartons of Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza brand stuffed sandwiches. Printed on the side of each carton is “8157544614D,” “EST 7721A,” and “BEST BEFORE JAN2010.” They were produced on June 5 and distributed to retail establishments nationwide. For more information, consumers should call 800-350-5016.
Don't Mess with This Dog
(AP)- A 15-pound cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners' back yard.
Whether his bark was worse than his bite, Pawlee's tactic worked just fine. These three bears got the hint and took off.
"We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off," owner Fran Osiason said.
Osiason said her 9-year-old son, Jacob, went outside to see what the commotion was about and came running back in to report there were bears in the yard.
She was worried that the mother would come after Pawlee to protect her cubs, but the pugnacious pup, just 8 months old, had other plans.
His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods. More...

WWJD?! An Italian priest says he's organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns.
It's an effort to give them more visibility in the Catholic church and to fight the stereotype that they're all old and ugly.
The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Reverend Antonio Rungi.
Nuns will fill out a profile of their life and vocation as well as a photograph. It will be up to them whether to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.
Father Rungi says "being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun," and he adds, "external beauty is a gift from God, and we mustn't hide it." Visitors to his site will have a month to vote.
Meet the New Idol Judge (AP)- Scooching in between Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson sounds intimidating, if not a little scary.
But , the newly-installed fourth judge on "American Idol," is confident she'll find her niche within the bickering, ratings-tested judges' panel where the line between love and hate is blurred with every critique.
"I'm just gonna speak to Simon the way I speak to everybody," DioGuardi told reporters during a teleconference Monday. "I'm just gonna have my opinion, be honest and I don't foresee any problems. I'm really excited about this, and up for the challenge."
The Grammy-nominated songwriter will make her debut when the eighth season of "Idol" premieres in January, the Fox network said Monday.
Who IS Kara DioGuardi?
"I'm maybe not a household name, but people know of me in the industry," said DioGuardi, who co-owns the Los-Angeles based company Arthouse Entertainment, which is now producing music by recent "Idol" runner-up David Archuleta.
DioGuardio's songs have been recorded by Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Pink, among others. Her recent Top 40 hits include Stefani's "Rich Girl," Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man," Clarkson's "Walk Away" and Dion's "Taking Chances." More...

DWTS Drama Kim Kardashian says despite slicing her foot open on a glass table, she'll be able to compete on Dancing With the Stars. "You know what, I will be able to dance. I will make it. I did cut my foot pretty badly in the hotel room. There was a mirror on a Venetian little desk and it was all broken and I saw it and I almost cut my finger, so to push away from it I used my foot ... because it just looked really bad... So I did hurt myself but it was fine. I went to the hospital, I'm fine."
Drama Queen TMZ has learned Kim Kardashian was "freaking out" after cutting her foot, calling 911 and later telling the EMT's she had an "emergency" because she was on "Dancing with the Stars."
The doctors decided to glue rather than suture the cut onKim's foot... so the wound couldn't have been that deep.
Kim wanted the glue because stitches take too long to heal and it would interfere with her mambo.

Sheen has three daughters: 25-year-old Cassandra Jade Estevez, whose mother is Sheen's former girlfriend Paula Profit, and two girls with ex-wife Denise Richards. Sheen and Richards are still embroiled in a bitter custody battle over 3-year-old Sam and 2-year-old Lola.

It's All Over
(freep.com)- A double-decker red bus carrying British soccer legend David Beckham rolled into the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on Sunday night and transformed an electronic Chinese farewell into a proper British garden party.
After 17 record-breaking days that rewrote the history books for off-the-chart athletic performances and over-the-top operations, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge declared the Games "truly exceptional."
Then the torch over the Bird's Nest was extinguished and the Olympic flag was handed over to the mayor of London, host of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The closing skipped over the ancient Chinese culture and seriousness permeating the opening ceremony and trumpeted China's arrival to the modern world. The colorful infield was infused with a hodgepodge of entertainers, celebrating the athletes with fireworks, confetti, streamers and songs that ranged from European arias to American rock.
When the show's theme shifted to London's Olympics, the red bus scene added a British slice of theater district and suspense on a night dominated by protocol. The bus top opened into a green topiary hedge and revealed shapes of London buildings, including the Tower of London and St. Paul's Cathedral.
Singer Leona Lewis emerged from the garden on a lift. When a lone guitarist rose next, it was Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, playing "Whole Lotta Love."
As the song closed, Beckham booted a ball into a crowd of British Olympians. Athletes from 204 nations walked into the ceremony early, including the gold medal U.S. women's soccer team. MORE...

Stars and Politicians in Denver (AP)- Musicians, artists and Hollywood types are descending on Denver — and so what if Barack Obama doesn't need their star power?
He'll get it anyway.
Of course, many of the most high-profile parties and concerts planned for the four-day Democratic Convention are ostensibly set apart from Team Obama.
Even fellow Chicagoan Kanye West's performance Wednesday is for Bono's nonpartisan ONE Campaign, which plans another concert — though with Chris Daughtry instead of West — on the sidelines of the Republican gathering in St. Paul, Minn.
The key Democrat-sponsored concert was a welcoming event Sunday night at Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, featuring Dave Matthews Band, Sugarland and Sheryl Crow.
The convention begins today, and don't be surprised to see many of Hollywood's A-listers in attendance. More...
More Trouble for the Barenaked Ladies (intelligencer.ca)- Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson and three others are "really lucky" to have survived a float-plane crash north of Bancroft Sunday, officials say.
Robertson's plane went down in the woods north of Bancroft early Sunday afternoon.
"Everyone is fine and that is the important thing," said Adam Smith, a spokesman for the band, said Sunday night in an e-mail to The Intelligencer. "That's all the comment we have at this time."
Sgt. Jeff MacKinnon of Bancroft OPP said the crash happened near Baptiste Lake, about 10 minutes north of Bancroft and one of the North Hastings district's most popular cottage areas.
He said the plane was totaled but all four adults managed to walk out of the woods and soon reported the crash.
MacKinnon said police aren't releasing any further details, including the names of the plane's occupants, because the investigation is now being headed by Canada's Transportation Safety Board.
Sources in the area, however, said Robertson was piloting his own plane.
Bogus Report
ET confirms that David Beckhamand wife Victoria Beckhamwere not in a terrifying car crash in France on Friday, as was widely reported on various news outlets over the weekend.
"This is a complete fabrication, absolutely not true," a spokesperson for the star couple tells ET.
According to the bogus report, the couple was staying at their home in the French Riviera last week and got into a nasty accident on the way to the airport in Nice, as the soccer star was set to fly to Beijing for the closing Olympic ceremonies.
The fabricated story claimed that the pair was involved in a horrific crash, which left their black BMW with a smashed windshield and extensive damage along the passenger side, leaving them "severely shaken." Furthermore, David was supposedly forced to leave his wife behind at the accident scene so he could catch his flight.
Madonna and Guy Going Strong
(dailymail..co.uk)- Madonna and Guy Ritchie made a last-ditch attempt to save their troubled marriage by renewing their wedding vows at a private kabbalah ceremony in London.
Madonna, who was 50 last weekend, is understood to have flown her kabbalah teacher over from Los Angeles to conduct the proceedings.
‘It was very intimate and both Guy and Madonna made vows to each other and pledged to try to make their marriage strong again,’ says my source.
‘The ceremony lasted about an hour. They turned up at the kabbalah centre in their gym clothes and changed into white robes. Everyone at the centre hopes that they will get through their recent rough patch.’
Madonna Kicks Off Tour (PEOPLE.com)- Sitting on a diamante "M" throne in a fringed black leotard and over-the-knee leather boots, Madonna kicked off her Sticky and Sweet tour Saturday night at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in Wales, opening with "Candy Shop."
The 40,000-strong audience was in for a night of treats, including onscreen appearances by Kanye West, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, who dueted on "4 Minutes."
Spears made her virtual guest spot during "Human Nature," writhing while trapped in an elevator as Madonna played the guitar. The popster departed with her trademark line "It's Britney B–!"
Madonna switched themes multiple times, going sporty for "Into the Groove" in diamante-encrusted shorts and a hoodie, and invoking the Far East for a segment that had her in a cage with computer-generated water gushing around it. "La Isla Bonita" turned the stage into a Mediterranean street party with Greek dancing and a flamenco solo performance. MORE...
